Horses - Equine Treatment

Sheldon began treating horses in 1996 when he was asked to help a real veteran mare of 27, who had fallen and could not get up. Having only two sessions of soft tissue manipulation she was able to walk around normally and remained healthy and mobile within the herd, until she finally succumbed to old age a year later.

From this success Sheldon was asked to treat other horses regularly and time and again they recovered from their injuries.

In 2004 he embarked on the intensive Equine Bodyworker Course and qualified later that year. He was then asked to help horses throughout the country from the Midlands, East Anglia and along the South Coast. From this, Sheldon has developed a good knowledge of most muscular and joint injuries in horses and also specialises in Barefoot and Veteran Horse treatment plans.

Over a period of years Sheldon became involved in the Natural Horsemanship movement and the non-violent treatment of horses. He is a believer in the ability of horses and people to become mutually respectful of each other without the need for people to dominate and bully to achieve results. After seeing the horse whisperer Monty Roberts at a demonstration, Sheldon was convinced he had finally seen a true horseman at work and was overwhelmed by the effectiveness and ease in which Monty had helped some very difficult behavioural problems.  In 2007 Sheldon began training with Kelly Marks at Monty Roberts' School of Intelligent Horsemanship in Oxfordshire and has now completed all the preliminary training. He is due to begin a horse psychology project and then hopes to complete his full Registered Associate training over the next few years.

Sheldon Ward - Equine Bodyworker

As an Equine Bodyworker Sheldon uses a combination of remedial massage, soft tissue techniques and stretching to help in the rehabilitation of horses that have sustained muscle or joint injuries or who have lost mobility due to injury or age.

He combines visual assessment and gait analysis with hands-on massage and soft tissue techniques to help clear areas of scarring and adhesions where they have developed. Further stretching would be performed to help mobilise areas of restriction and increase range of motion.

Finally a self-help plan would be developed for the owner to speed up further the recovery process, using massage, exercise and stretching in between treatments.

Equine Bodyworkers have strict codes of conduct and do not diagnose horse injuries or illness.

Sheldon only works with the consent of the vet in charge and permission must be sought at all times to ensure the horse receives the best care possible.
